Chemonics seeks a nutrition senior advisor for the anticipated USAID Feed the Future Resilient Food Systems Activity in Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). The activity aims to increase the income and nutritional status of the targeted population through an inclusive and sustainable food and market systems-oriented approach that facilitates agriculture-led growth and utilization of nutritious food. Specific objectives of the activity include: (1) Promote inclusive and sustainable local systems and practices for agriculture-led economic growth; (2) Increase sources of resilience among people, communities, and systems; (3) Increase the year-round consumption of safe, diverse, and nutritious food; and (4) Effective integration of prioritized cross cutting focus areas within every aspect, approach, and initiative of the activity Moreover, the geographic focus on the activity will be the Kasai Central and Kongo Central regions.. The nutrition senior advisor will collaborate with local governments, private sector entities, and other partners to identify and implement strategies to enhance the availability and consumption of safe, nutritious food. By adopting a systems approach, they will aim to foster a sustainable and resilient food system by reducing food loss and waste, improving access to post-harvest technologies, and enhancing the storage of nutritious foods, as well as increasing their desirability. Using a facilitative approach, they will focus on improving the diets of Congolese citizens and support a food system that meets their nutritional needs. This position will be based in Kinshasa, DRC with the ability to travel frequently to project sites. Responsibilities include:
- Develop and maintain relationships with nutrition and food system actors from the private sector, public sector, and civil society;
- Lead the design, development, and implementation of food systems approach working through food systems, including supply- and demand-side activities;
- Utilize facilitative approaches to engage private sector actors, and other relevant stakeholders to identify effective behaviors, actions, and activities to promote the availability and consumption of safe and nutritious food within the food system, with an emphasis on gender and youth inclusion;
- Work with private sector and other food system actors to align market demand and availability to produce nutrient-dense foods; and
- Leverage technology in approaches to address improvements in production, processing, and storage of safe foods.
Qualifications:
- Master’s degree in nutrition, food technology, agricultural economics, or a related field;
- Minimum of 5 years’ experience in design and implementation/of nutrition programs aimed at improving availability of nutritious foods, food production, food processing, and food loss/waste interventions;
- Demonstrated experience providing advice and assistance to governments, international organizations, and various public, nonprofit, and private agencies/organizations on matters relating to multi-sectoral nutrition and agriculture activities;
- Experience conducting studies and performing other analytical work related to the planning, development, organization, administration, evaluation, and delivery of multi-sectoral nutrition and agriculture programs;
- Understanding of household food security concepts, terms, and analytical approaches, as well as a strong interest in multi-sectoral integrated analysis;
- Significant experience implementing relevant programming or conducting research/analysis in developing countries;
- Demonstrated experience in institutional strengthening and partnership building in food system approaches;
- Practical experience working with a range of program partners, including government agencies, regulatory bodies, the private sector, and NGOs;
- Experience working on USAID funded projects preferred;
- Demonstrated ability to work and coordinate effectively with a wide variety of stakeholders;
- Strong analytical skills and writing abilities; and
- Fluent English and French oral and written communication skills required.
